Five top tips to help you find the secret to being great at ten pin bowling!
- Choose your ball carefully. The different coloured balls at our bowling centres are of different weights and finger sizes. Choose one that feels comfortable for you. The holes should give you a little bit of wiggle room, feeling slightly larger than your fingers. If it’s too heavy, or too big or small for your fingers, the chances are your ball will end up in the gutter!
- Don’t rush! The secret to ten pin bowling is to get your aim right. Work on technique first before speed and power. If you quickly fling the ball at the lane, you’re probably not going to be too accurate! Keep your shoulders square and aim to right side of the pins in the second row if you’re right-handed and to the left if you’re left-handed.
- Get your arms and knees right! Arms should be straight when you swing the ball, changing to a bent position once the ball is released and your knees should bend towards the lane as you swing, straightening as you release.
- Don’t throw the ball! You’re more likely to get a strike if you roll the ball, rather than throwing it onto the lane and hoping for the best! Taking the time to get your technique right - rather than just throwing and hoping - will reap rewards!
- Don’t be too competitive (if you can help it!) Bowling is supposed to be a fun activity everyone can enjoy. Winning is nice but taking part and ensuring everyone enjoys themselves and feels like they can improve for next time is the key!
